Named and inspired by Sergei Diaghilev, founder of the Ballets Russes, Diaghilev is a reminiscing tale of someone who drenched the curtains in his bedroom and theatres with Guerlain’s Mitsouko and his uncompromising artistic vision.
It has a wonderful fizzy citrusy opening evolving into an extremely refined floral middle phase to then turn into a fresh and rich mossy vetiver drydown. Insanely rich, opulent and an ode to the well-bred, distant past, Diaghilev stands tall on the three pillars of the chypre – oak moss, bergamot, and labdanum resin, above all other chypres – for two reasons. First, the quality of the raw materials – think the smoothest oak moss, the inkiest vetiver, the most exquisite ambrette seed, and finest floral absolutes – makes for an intoxicating experience. Diaghilev’s florals are an abstract, seamless blur like a full orchestra tuning up, hard to pull apart. Second, Roja Dove has flushed the perfume with sensual musks, civet, resins, overripe fruit, and castoreum, loosening the stays on that uptight chypre structure and making it impossible to wear without thinking about sensual experiences.
